Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xiaoke Wan (also known as Xiaoke Pill) is a Chinese-Western combination medicine widely used in China for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is formulated as concentrated water pills containing a combination of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs—including Radix Puerariae, Radix Rehmanniae, Radix Astragali, Radix Trichosanthis, Stylus Zeae Maydis, Fructus Schisandrae Sphenantherae, and Rhizoma Dioscoreae—along with a low dose of the sulfonylurea glibenclamide (glyburide). The herbal components are selected based on traditional Chinese medicine principles to nourish kidney yin, replenish qi, and promote body fluid production, addressing the symptoms of 'consumptive thirst' (xiao ke). Glibenclamide acts as an insulin secretagogue by binding to and inhibiting the sulfonylurea receptor 1 (SUR1) subunit of ATP-sensitive potassium (K_ATP) channels in pancreatic beta cells, leading to membrane depolarization, calcium influx, and insulin release. Xiaoke Wan is developed and manufactured by Guangzhou Baiyunshan Zhongyi Pharmaceutical.
