Xiaotang seven-herb formula

Xiaotang seven-herb formula is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula composed of seven distinct herbs: Huangqi (Astragalus), Shanyao (Dioscorea opposita), Gegen (Pueraria lobata), Shengdihuang (Rehmannia glutinosa), Huanglian (Coptis chinensis), Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza), and Yuzhu (Polygonatum odoratum). This formula is rooted in the "Xiaoke theory" (wasting-thirst theory, related to diabetes) from the classic text "Jingyue Quanshu" and is specifically designed for diabetes of the qi-yin deficiency type. Its therapeutic actions are described in TCM as benefiting qi and nourishing yin, clearing heat, and activating blood circulation. Biologically, it is understood to improve glucose metabolic imbalance by strengthening the spleen and stomach's transportation and transformation functions. Preclinical and clinical research suggests it can lower alpha-glucosidase activity, reduce glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and exert protective effects on pancreatic beta-cells. It is currently under clinical investigation for the treatment of prediabetes and early type 2 diabetes.
