Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xiaozhang Plaster is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) topical formulation specifically developed for the management of abdominal distension and ascites associated with liver cirrhosis, particularly hepatitis B-related cirrhosis. The plaster is typically applied externally to the umbilical region (the Shenque point in TCM), allowing for the transdermal absorption of active herbal constituents. Common ingredients include *Euphorbia kansui* (Gansui), *Rheum palmatum* (Dahuang), and *Mirabilite* (Mangxiao). Its therapeutic effect is attributed to the modulation of water metabolism and portal hemodynamics. Research suggests that the active compounds may regulate the expression of aquaporins (such as AQP1 and AQP5) in the peritoneum and kidneys, promoting diuresis and the resorption of peritoneal fluid. It is widely used in China as an adjuvant therapy to conventional Western treatments, such as diuretics and antiviral agents, to reduce abdominal girth and improve the quality of life in patients with refractory ascites.
