Xiaozhong Zhitong

Xiaozhong Zhitong is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation used primarily for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, reducing swelling, and relieving pain. It is commonly administered as a mixture (oral liquid), tincture (topical application), or plaster (topical cream). The formulation is indicated for conditions such as trauma-induced swelling and pain, prevention of heterotopic ossification after orthopedic surgery (notably total hip arthroplasty), ischemia-reperfusion injury in skin flaps, and cancer-related pain[2][7][9][10]. Clinical studies suggest its efficacy in preventing heterotopic ossification with fewer side effects compared to indomethacin[2]. Its mechanism of action involves anti-inflammatory effects and modulation of local microcirculation; however, the precise molecular targets are not fully elucidated. The main herbal ingredients may include Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Coix seed (Yi Yi Ren), Lonicera japonica stem (Ren Dong Teng), cypress twig/leaves, among others[9]. Topical forms may also contain Cynanchum paniculatum root extract ("Xu Changqing"), camphor oil derivatives, menthol compounds, borneolum syntheticum ("Bing Pian"), turpentine oil ("Song Jie You"), and other TCM herbs[6][8].
