XIAP shRNA is a research-stage experimental modality utilizing short hairpin RNA (shRNA) to knock down the expression of the X-linked Inhibitor of Apoptosis Protein (XIAP), also known as BIRC4. XIAP is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family that functions by binding to and inhibiting caspase-3, -7, and -9, thereby preventing apoptosis and promoting cancer cell survival. By silencing XIAP through RNA interference (RNAi), this modality sensitizes cancer cells to apoptotic stimuli and inhibits tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. Preclinical studies have explored its efficacy in various malignancies, including bladder cancer, non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), hepatocellular carcinoma, and leukemia, often delivered via viral vectors like lentivirus or adenovirus.
