xibornol

Xibornol is a lipophilic, non-antibiotic antimicrobial agent primarily used in Italy and Spain for the local treatment of infections and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, including the throat and oral cavity. Chemically identified as 6-isobornyl-3,4-xylenol, it exhibits potent antibacterial activity against Gram-positive pathogens such as *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, *Streptococcus pyogenes*, and *Staphylococcus aureus*. Recent studies have also highlighted its virucidal potential against various respiratory viruses, including human adenovirus, rhinovirus, and coronavirus 229E.
