Overview

Xience is a family of drug-eluting coronary stent systems used in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to treat coronary artery disease. The stents are made from medical-grade L-605 cobalt chromium alloy and are coated with a non-erodible polymer containing everolimus as the active drug. Everolimus is an mTOR inhibitor that suppresses neointimal hyperplasia by inhibiting smooth muscle cell proliferation and migration within the arterial wall. The polymer coating controls the release of everolimus into the vessel wall over time to reduce restenosis (re-narrowing) after stent placement. Multiple generations exist within the XIENCE family (e.g., XIENCE V™, PRIME™, Alpine™, Sierra™, Skypoint™), differing mainly in design features and deliverability but sharing core materials and mechanism[1][3][4][5][6][7].
