Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xingpijieyu (XPJY), also known as XingPiJieYu formula or decoction (XPJYF/XPJYD), is a traditional Chinese medicine compound used primarily for the treatment of depression. It consists of multiple herbal components including Panax quinquefolius (American ginseng), Acorus tatarinowii, Curcuma longa L. (turmeric), and Hypericum perforatum L. (St. John's wort)[1][6]. The mechanism of action is multi-faceted and includes modulation of the gut microbiota-brain axis to reduce neuroinflammation[1][3], restoration of mitochondrial function in brain tissue[1], regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis[7], and enhancement of signaling pathways such as cAMP-PKA-CREB-BDNF in the hippocampus that are associated with learning, memory, and mood regulation[2][5]. Network pharmacology studies suggest that its antidepressant effects involve inhibition of apoptosis, reduction in oxidative stress injury, improvement in energy metabolism within neural tissues, and increased monoamine neurotransmitter levels[6][7]. Animal studies indicate efficacy comparable to or better than sertraline for improving depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment induced by chronic stress[2][5].
