Overview
Xingqi Zhitong is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by the Shanxi Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine for the management of acute radiation-induced esophagitis (ARIE). ARIE is a common complication in patients undergoing radiotherapy for thoracic malignancies, such as lung or esophageal cancer, characterized by inflammation and mucosal injury. The formulation, typically administered as a decoction or granules, is designed to regulate Qi circulation and alleviate pain while providing anti-inflammatory and mucosal protective effects. Clinical research conducted at the developing institution suggests that Xingqi Zhitong can significantly reduce the severity of esophageal damage and decrease systemic levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), which are key mediators in radiation-induced tissue injury.
