Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xiongdan Niuhuang is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combination therapy, most notably produced as an oropharyngeal spray by Hunan Jiudian Pharmaceutical. It is composed of bear bile powder (Xiongdan) and calculus bovis (Niuhuang). The drug is indicated for the treatment of acute upper respiratory tract infections, specifically for relieving symptoms such as sore throat, swelling, and cough associated with wind-heat syndrome. The pharmacological action is primarily attributed to the high concentration of bile acids, such as ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), which exhibit significant anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antipyretic activities. It is typically administered as a spray to provide localized relief to the throat while also exerting systemic anti-inflammatory effects through mucosal absorption.
