Overview

Xiongdan Wan is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) preparation primarily composed of bear bile powder. Historically used in Chinese medicine for its anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and "heat-clearing" properties, it is being investigated for its potential therapeutic effects in psychiatric conditions. Clinical research, including studies conducted by the Shanghai Mental Health Center, has explored its efficacy as a monotherapy for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). The pharmacological activity of Xiongdan Wan is largely attributed to its high concentration of bile acids, particularly tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). These compounds are thought to exert neuroprotective effects by modulating neuroinflammation, inhibiting apoptotic pathways, and potentially influencing the gut-brain axis through the activation of specific bile acid receptors.
