Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xitabin is an oral chemotherapy medication containing capecitabine, developed and manufactured by Beacon Pharmaceuticals. It serves as a prodrug that undergoes a three-step enzymatic conversion to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), with the final conversion often occurring within tumor tissues via the enzyme thymidine phosphorylase. The active metabolite, 5-FU, inhibits thymidylate synthase, an enzyme essential for the synthesis of thymidine monophosphate, thereby disrupting DNA synthesis and slowing the growth of cancer cells. Xitabin is indicated for the treatment of various solid tumors, including metastatic colorectal cancer, adjuvant colon cancer (Dukes' C), metastatic breast cancer (as monotherapy or in combination with docetaxel), and cancers of the gastric, esophageal, and pancreatic systems.
