Drug intelligence / Profile preview
XJB-5-131 is a synthetic, mitochondria-targeted nitroxide antioxidant and electron scavenger. It is a bi-functional conjugate consisting of a mitochondrial targeting peptide isostere derived from the Leu-D-Phe-Pro-Val-Orn segment of the antibiotic gramicidin S, linked to the stable nitroxide radical TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl). XJB-5-131 acts as a superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic and a mild uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation, neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS) directly within the mitochondria and preventing lipid peroxidation of cardiolipin and phosphatidylserine. It has been investigated preclinically for various conditions associated with oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction, including Huntington's disease, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, hemorrhagic shock, osteoarthritis, and radiation-induced cystitis.
