XOMA 629 is a synthetic, cationic α-helical antimicrobial peptide derived from the human bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI). Developed by XOMA Corporation, it was designed as a topical treatment for bacterial skin infections, including acne vulgaris, impetigo, and rosacea. The compound acts as an endotoxin inhibitor and exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including *Propionibacterium acnes* and methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA), by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and neutralizing lipopolysaccharides. Although it reached Phase II clinical trials for impetigo and acne, development was ultimately discontinued following inconclusive results.
