Overview

XTAR is a specialized anti-calculus dentifrice (toothpaste) formulation containing 5% sodium and potassium pyrophosphate combined with 0.24% sodium fluoride (equivalent to 900 ppm fluoride). Marketed by ICPA Health Products, the formulation was evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial conducted by the Government Dental College and Research Institute, Bangalore, specifically targeting heavy calculus formers. The active pyrophosphate components function as small molecule chelating agents and crystal growth inhibitors. They work by binding to calcium ions in the saliva to form soluble complexes, which prevents the mineralization of dental plaque into hard dental calculus (tartar). The product is indicated for individuals clinically diagnosed as heavy calculus formers and is typically recommended for use twice daily for a minimum of 8-12 weeks to achieve significant anti-calculus efficacy.
