Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xulane is a transdermal contraceptive patch containing the estrogen ethinyl estradiol and the progestin norelgestromin. It is a generic version of Ortho Evra and is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy. The patch works by delivering hormones through the skin into the bloodstream, which primarily inhibits ovulation by suppressing the release of gonadotropins from the pituitary gland. Additionally, it alters cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and modifies the endometrium to discourage implantation. In clinical research conducted by Penn State University, Xulane was studied to evaluate the impact of non-oral hormonal delivery on the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis and bone turnover in young women, comparing its metabolic profile to oral and vaginal contraceptive options.
