Overview

XVR013 is a bivalent, heavy chain-only camelid single-domain antibody (VHH or nanobody) developed by ExeVir Bio for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. It specifically targets a highly conserved epitope in the S2 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which is essential for viral membrane fusion and entry into host cells. By binding to this region, XVR013 neutralizes all major variants of concern—including Omicron subvariants—by preventing membrane fusion, thus blocking infection. Unlike first-generation antibodies that target the more variable S1 region, XVR013’s unique mechanism allows it to retain potency against circulating and emerging variants that have rendered other antibody therapies obsolete. The drug is designed to provide protection especially for immunocompromised patients who do not respond adequately to vaccines[2][3][4][8]. As of June 2025, its highest development status is preclinical[1].
