Overview

Xycrobe is a live biotherapeutic product (LBP) platform based on a proprietary, non-pathogenic strain of *Cutibacterium acnes* (formerly *Propionibacterium acnes*). Developed by Xycrobe Therapeutics, the technology is designed to address inflammatory skin conditions by leveraging the natural ability of commensal bacteria to colonize the pilosebaceous unit. The lead candidate, often referred to as XYC-001, works through competitive exclusion of proinflammatory, pathogenic strains of *C. acnes* and can be engineered to secrete therapeutic proteins, such as antioxidants or anti-inflammatory molecules, directly at the site of disease. Following the acquisition of Xycrobe Therapeutics by SkinBetter Science in 2018, and the subsequent acquisition of SkinBetter Science by L'Oréal in 2022, the technology has been positioned for both pharmaceutical and high-end dermatological applications, primarily targeting acne vulgaris.
