Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Xylitol + red propolis is an investigational combination therapy developed by the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for the control of dental plaque and biofilm, specifically in adolescent populations. The formulation combines xylitol, a sugar alcohol that inhibits the growth and metabolic activity of cariogenic bacteria such as *Streptococcus mutans*, with red propolis, a natural resinous substance produced by honeybees that possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Delivered as an oral tablet, the combination is designed to increase salivary pH and reduce the concentration of extracellular polysaccharides in dental biofilm, thereby limiting the proliferation of oral microorganisms. Clinical trials conducted by the UFRJ School of Dentistry have evaluated the efficacy, salivary parameters, and acceptability of these tablets compared to xylitol-only formulations.
