Overview

Xylometazoline is a direct-acting alpha-adrenergic agonist and imidazole derivative used as a topical nasal decongestant. It works by binding to alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa to cause vasoconstriction of blood vessels. This reduces swelling and congestion associated with conditions such as the common cold, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and sinusitis. Its sympathomimetic action leads to rapid relief of nasal stuffiness but should not be used for more than 7–10 days due to risk of rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa). It is available over-the-counter in many countries as sprays or drops[1][3][5].
