Overview

Xylose-derived lactam oxime is a synthetic small molecule compound derived from xylose, a pentose sugar commonly found in wood and plant materials[2][3]. Structurally, it features a piperidine (lactam) backbone with three hydroxyl groups at positions 3, 4, and 5, and an oxime group at position 2[3]. The compound belongs to the class of sugar oximes—molecules that have shown diverse biological activities including enzyme inhibition and potential as cholinesterase reactivators[5][6]. Sugar oximes are being explored for their ability to reactivate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibited by organophosphates, suggesting possible use as antidotes for nerve agent or pesticide poisoning. Xylose-derived lactam oxime has also been studied as an experimental ligand for exoglucanase/xylanase from Cellulomonas fimi but does not have any approved medical indications or known clinical development beyond preclinical research[1][9].
