Overview

Yam polysaccharides are a class of complex carbohydrates extracted from the tubers of yam plants (genus Dioscorea). [1, 7] They are considered a primary bioactive component of yams and are utilized in foods, health products, and medicines. [1] The composition and structure of yam polysaccharides can vary depending on the yam species and extraction methods used. [1, 5] Research has shown that yam polysaccharides possess a wide range of biological activities, including immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-fatigue effects. [1, 7, 18, 20] A key mechanism of action is their role as a prebiotic, where they promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Bacteroides, thereby regulating the intestinal microflora. [3, 4] This modulation of the gut microbiome is linked to many of their health benefits. [3, 11] In a clinical trial, yam polysaccharides are being investigated as part of a prebiotic formulation to modulate intestinal microflora in patients with end-stage renal disease.
