Overview
YASO GEL is a non-hormonal, topical vaginal contraceptive gel being developed by Yaso Therapeutics Corporation as a multipurpose prevention technology (MPT). The active pharmaceutical ingredient is polyphenylene carboxymethylene (PPCM), a small molecule condensation polymer derived from mandelic acid with a molecular weight of approximately 3900 g/mol. YASO GEL exerts its contraceptive effect by rendering sperm infertile through the induction of premature acrosome loss and the inhibition of sperm capacitation. Additionally, it possesses broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties by preventing the binding and fusion of various viral and bacterial pathogens to host cells, including HIV, HSV-2, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. The drug is designed for pericoital (on-demand) use and is currently undergoing Phase I clinical evaluation to assess safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics.
