Drug intelligence / Profile preview
YAT2150 is a first-in-class bis(styrylpyridinium) salt and aggregated protein dye that acts as a potent antiparasitic agent. It is being developed for the treatment of malaria (caused by *Plasmodium falciparum* and *Plasmodium vivax*) and leishmaniasis (caused by *Leishmania infantum* and *Leishmania major*). Its primary mechanism of action is the inhibition of functional protein aggregation in the parasites, which disrupts proteostasis and compromises parasite viability. In *Leishmania*, it has also been shown to rapidly reduce ATP levels. Due to its multiple molecular targets, YAT2150 exhibits a low propensity for the development of drug resistance. To address its moderate cytotoxicity in human cells, researchers are developing nanoencapsulation strategies, such as liposomal and immunoliposomal formulations, to enhance its safety and selectivity.
