Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ye jiao teng is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb consisting of the dried stems of *Polygonum multiflorum* Thunb. (also known as *Fallopia multiflora*). It is distinct from the root of the same plant (He Shou Wu) and is primarily utilized in East Asian medicine for its sedative and hypnotic properties, historically described as "nourishing the heart and calming the spirit." The herb is commonly prescribed to treat insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, and neurocognitive impairment. Its pharmacological profile involves the modulation of the central nervous system through the regulation of neurotransmitter expression in the hypothalamus. Clinical evidence suggests it can significantly increase levels of serotonin (5-HT) while reducing levels of excitatory neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, which may also contribute to its observed benefits in patients with HIV-related neurological diseases.
