The yellow fever vaccine is a live-attenuated vaccine, typically based on the 17D strain, used to provide long-term immunity against the yellow fever virus. In the context of clinical research led by the University of Oxford, this licensed vaccine is being evaluated for safety and immunogenicity when co-administered with the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine in African children. This evaluation is part of a Phase Ib trial (NCT05483972) designed to ensure that the introduction of new malaria vaccines into the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) does not interfere with the protective efficacy of existing childhood vaccines. The vaccine works by inducing a robust neutralizing antibody response and T-cell mediated immunity against the yellow fever virus envelope protein.
