Dolichovespula arenaria venom protein is an allergen extract derived from the venom of the aerial yellowjacket. It is primarily utilized in clinical settings for the diagnosis and treatment of Hymenoptera venom hypersensitivity. As a diagnostic agent, it is used in skin prick or intradermal testing to identify patients at risk of systemic allergic reactions. As a therapeutic agent, it is administered via venom immunotherapy (VIT), a process involving the subcutaneous injection of increasing doses of the venom to induce immunological tolerance. The mechanism involves shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated (IgE-producing) profile to a Th1/Treg-mediated profile, increasing the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies and reducing mast cell and basophil activation.
