Overview

YHI-1501 is an investigational small molecule metabolic agent being developed by Yakult Honsha for the treatment of hyperuricemia. It functions as a selective inhibitor of the urate transporter 1 (URAT1), a protein encoded by the SLC22A12 gene that is responsible for the reabsorption of uric acid in the proximal tubules of the kidney. By inhibiting URAT1, YHI-1501 increases the renal excretion of uric acid, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels. As of 2024, the drug is in Phase 1 clinical development in Japan, with studies evaluating its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy adult subjects.
