Yigutang is a Chinese herbal compound preparation primarily investigated for the treatment of osteoporosis, including senile and postmenopausal forms. It functions by promoting bone formation and inhibiting bone resorption. Its proposed mechanisms of action involve modulating key signaling pathways such as P13K/AKT/GSK-3β and Wnt/β-catenin, which leads to increased osteoblast activity, enhanced alkaline phosphatase activity, improved Ca2+ deposition, and upregulation of osteogenic markers like OCN and Runx2. Clinical and animal studies suggest that Yigutang can effectively increase bone mineral density (BMD), improve bone biomechanical properties, and elevate serum hormone levels, specifically estradiol and the estradiol/testosterone ratio, contributing to its therapeutic effects in osteoporosis. It is considered a traditional Chinese medicine and is administered orally.
