Overview

Yimucao is the Chinese name for the herb *Leonurus japonicus* (commonly known as Chinese motherwort), a traditional medicinal plant widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The aerial parts of the plant are used. Yimucao is primarily indicated for gynecological conditions such as irregular menstruation, amenorrhea, postpartum abdominal pain and bleeding (metrorrhagia and postpartum hemorrhage), and to promote uterine health. It is also used to treat edema and urinary discomfort due to its diuretic properties. Pharmacologically, it contains flavonoids, sterols, triterpenes, tannins and other compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In TCM theory it "invigorates blood," promotes urination by reducing swelling/edema associated with blood stasis or heat conditions without affecting new blood formation. Some studies suggest it may stimulate uterine contractions via oxytocin release[2][4][5]. Modern research has explored its use in reducing bleeding after childbirth or abortion procedures[1][6]. There is also evidence of antibacterial activity.
