Overview

Yin Zhi Huang is a traditional Chinese medicine formula composed of extracts from Artemisia capillaris (Yin Chin), Gardenia jasminoides (Zhi Zi), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin), and Lonicera japonica (Jin Yin Hua). It is widely used in China and other parts of Asia for the treatment and prevention of jaundice, particularly neonatal jaundice, as well as for liver disorders such as acute and chronic hepatitis. The main pharmacological actions include clearing heat, detoxifying the body, promoting bile secretion, reducing bilirubin levels, and alleviating symptoms associated with liver dysfunction. Mechanistically, Yin Zhi Huang accelerates bilirubin clearance by activating the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR/NR1I3) pathway in hepatocytes. This activation induces expression of enzymes involved in bilirubin metabolism such as UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1). Other pathways implicated include AMPK/SREBP-1 and AMPK/ACC/CPT1A signaling relevant to hepatic lipid metabolism[6][8][10]. The active constituents identified include chlorogenic acid from Lonicera japonica; geniposide from Gardenia jasminoides; baicalin from Scutellaria baicalensis; coumarins; flavonoids; iridoid glycosides; organic acids[2]. Clinical indications are primarily for "liver-gallbladder damp-heat" syndromes manifesting as jaundice with yellowish skin or eyes, chest/flank pain or distension, nausea/vomiting, dark urine—corresponding to acute/chronic hepatitis or hyperbilirubinemia[5][7].
