Overview
Yinchenhao Decoction (YCHD) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula first documented in the *Shanghan Lun* (Treatise on Febrile Diseases) by Zhang Zhongjing. It is a three-herb combination consisting of *Artemisia capillaris* Thunb. (Yinchen), *Gardenia jasminoides* Ellis (Zhizi), and *Rheum palmatum* L. (Dahuang). YCHD is traditionally indicated for the treatment of jaundice and "damp-heat" syndromes. Modern pharmacological research identifies it as a hepatoprotective and choleretic agent that regulates bile acid metabolism, reduces hepatic inflammation, and inhibits oxidative stress. It is currently being investigated in clinical trials for metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), chronic hepatitis B, and intrahepatic cholestasis. Its mechanism of action involves the activation of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and the upregulation of bile acid transporters such as the bile salt export pump (BSEP) and multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2).
