Overview
Yiqi Kaimi is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formula developed by Longhua Hospital, Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically for the treatment of functional constipation and melanosis coli. The formula is designed to tonify Qi and promote intestinal transit, addressing the underlying "Qi deficiency" pattern frequently observed in chronic constipation patients. Mechanistically, Yiqi Kaimi has been shown to modulate the gut microbiota, improve colonic motility by protecting and stimulating interstitial cells of Cajal, and alleviate colonic mucosal pigmentation in melanosis coli by inhibiting epithelial cell apoptosis. It is typically administered as an oral decoction or in granule form and has been evaluated in several clinical trials in China for its efficacy in improving bowel movement frequency and stool consistency.
