YM90K is a selective and potent antagonist of the alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid (AMPA) receptor, a subtype of ionotropic glutamate receptors. It competitively inhibits AMPA receptors (Ki = 84 nM), while displaying lesser activity against kainate (Ki = 2.2 µM) and NMDA receptors (Ki > 37 µM)[3][9]. YM90K exhibits neuroprotective effects, reducing neuronal injury and infarction volumes following ischemic insults in animal models[2][3][7]. It is also shown to delay neuronal death in models of global and focal cerebral ischemia[2][3]. YM90K is not neurotoxic to cerebrocortical neurons in rats[5], and it does not induce the heat shock response typical of some other glutamate receptor antagonists. The compound is primarily used for research purposes and has not been approved for clinical use.
