Overview

Yohimbe is an herbal supplement derived from the bark of the West African evergreen tree Pausinystalia yohimbe[3][4][5]. It has a long-standing traditional use as an aphrodisiac and for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The active alkaloid in yohimbe bark is yohimbine, which acts primarily as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist—blocking inhibitory presynaptic receptors and thereby increasing neurotransmitter release, including norepinephrine[1][6]. This leads to increased sympathetic activity, vasodilation in genital tissues, and effects on mood, anxiety, and sexual arousal[1][6]. Yohimbe is also marketed for weight loss, athletic performance, and as a stimulant, though there is limited clinical evidence for these uses and significant safety concerns exist, especially with variable alkaloid content in supplements[2][3][4][5][7].
