Overview
Yokukansankachimpihange is a traditional Japanese Kampo medicine developed and manufactured by Tsumura & Co. It is a modified version of the classic Yokukansan formula, created by adding *Citrus unshiu* peel (Chimpi) and *Pinellia ternata* tuber (Hange) to the original seven-herb preparation. This modification is intended to improve efficacy in patients with gastrointestinal weakness or chronic symptoms. The medicine is primarily used to treat neurosensory symptoms such as irritability, agitation, and insomnia. In clinical research, it is specifically being evaluated for its ability to manage behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Its pharmacological effects are attributed to its multi-component nature, which modulates the serotonergic and glutamatergic systems, including 5-HT2A receptor antagonism and enhancement of glutamate clearance.
