YQ23 is a bovine-derived, stabilized, non-polymeric, cross-linked tetrameric hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier. It is designed to increase the delivery of oxygen to tissues and organs in conditions where blood supply is compromised or hypoxic environments are present. Mechanistically, it acts as an artificial oxygen carrier that can modulate the tumor microenvironment by increasing tissue oxygenation and has demonstrated immunomodulating and antineoplastic activities in preclinical studies. It has been investigated for its potential to reduce ischemia-reperfusion injury (such as after severe hemorrhage or surgery), suppress liver tumor metastasis by reducing circulating endothelial progenitor cells and regulatory T cells (Tregs), and enhance anti-tumor immune responses. The drug is being developed primarily for indications including solid tumors (notably liver cancer), chronic limb-threatening ischemia, perioperative ischemia, limb ischemia due to trauma or surgery, and severe hemorrhage[1][2][3][4][5][7].
