Yttrium (90Y) resin microspheres are a radiopharmaceutical used in Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT), also known as radioembolization. The product consists of biocompatible resin microspheres, approximately 20 to 60 micrometers in diameter, containing the beta-emitting isotope Yttrium-90. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) in the liver and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The microspheres are delivered via a catheter into the hepatic artery, where they become trapped in the microvasculature of the tumor. Once lodged, the Yttrium-90 isotope emits high-energy beta radiation with a mean range of 2.5 mm in tissue, delivering a localized, lethal dose of radiation to the tumor cells while minimizing exposure to healthy liver tissue. This dual mechanism of action involves both mechanical embolization of the tumor's blood supply and targeted internal radiotherapy.
