Yttrium-86 has a half-life of approximately 14.7 hours and decays by positron emission, making it suitable for use as a PET imaging agent[3][4][5]. It is primarily used in research settings to study biodistribution and pharmacokinetics of analogous compounds, such as gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), due to the similar chemical behavior between trivalent yttrium and gadolinium ions[1][2]. Yttrium-86 labeled compounds can also be used for preclinical evaluation of targeted radiopharmaceuticals, including peptides that bind specific receptors (e.g., alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone receptor or gastrin-releasing peptide receptor)[4]. The primary indication for yttrium-86 citrate is as an imaging agent in PET studies; it also serves as a theranostic pair with therapeutic isotopes like yttrium-90[5].
