Yttrium-90 microspheres are biocompatible glass or resin beads containing the radioactive isotope yttrium-90. They are used in transarterial radioembolization (TARE), a form of selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) primarily for the treatment of primary and secondary liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and metastatic colorectal cancer. The procedure involves injecting these radioactive spheres directly into the hepatic artery supplying the tumor. The spheres become lodged in small blood vessels within tumors and emit beta radiation locally over approximately two weeks before decaying to inactivity. This targeted approach delivers high-dose radiation to tumors while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Clinical evidence supports their use as monotherapy or in combination with systemic agents; they may also be used to downstage tumors prior to surgery or transplantation[1][2][3][4][5][8].
