Overview
Yu Quan Wan (Jade Spring Pill) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula widely used for the management of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, historically referred to as 'Xiao Ke' (wasting-thirst) syndrome. The formula typically comprises a synergistic blend of herbs including *Trichosanthes kirilowii* (Tian Hua Fen), *Pueraria lobata* (Ge Gen), *Ophiopogon japonicus* (Mai Dong), *Rehmannia glutinosa* (Di Huang), *Schisandra chinensis* (Wu Wei Zi), and *Astragalus membranaceus* (Huang Qi). Pharmacologically, Yu Quan Wan has been shown to lower blood glucose levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and protect pancreatic beta-cell function. In TCM theory, it functions by nourishing Yin, clearing heat, and promoting the generation of body fluids to alleviate symptoms such as excessive thirst, hunger, and frequent urination. It is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies in China, most notably Beijing Tong Ren Tang, and is available as an over-the-counter or prescription TCM drug.
