Overview

Yueju Pill is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed over 800 years ago by Zhu Danxi. It consists of five herbs and is primarily used to treat depression-related syndromes and mood disorders. Modern research has demonstrated that Yueju Pill exhibits rapid antidepressant effects comparable to ketamine, likely through the upregulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus[1][2][4]. The main active herb responsible for this effect appears to be Gardenia jasminoides Ellis. Beyond its psychiatric uses, recent studies suggest potential benefits in metabolic diseases such as nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), obesity, and hyperlipidemia by regulating lipid metabolism and protecting hepatocytes[3]. The formula works by promoting Qi movement and releasing various types of stagnation (Qi, Blood, Phlegm, Fire, Food, Dampness)[7][8].
