Overview
Yueju Pill is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation composed of five medicinal plants: Cyperus rotundus L. (Xiang Fu), Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. (Chuan Xiong), Gardenia jasminoides Ellis (Zhi Zi), Atractylodes lancea (Cang Zu), and Massa Fermentata (Shen Qu). It is being evaluated by Fudan University as an adjunctive therapy to standard anti-tumor treatment (typically chemotherapy) for patients with advanced biliary tract cancer (BTC) who exhibit mild-to-moderate anxiety or depression. Preclinical evidence indicates that Yueju Pill provides rapid antidepressant effects by upregulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus and modulating serotonin and GABAergic neurotransmission. The ongoing multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial aims to determine if the addition of Yueju Pill to standard chemotherapy improves the quality of life and clinical outcomes for BTC patients by addressing psychological comorbidities.
