Yunnan Baiyao

Yunnan Baiyao is a proprietary traditional Chinese medicine formula developed in 1902 by Qu Huangzhang and produced in China. It is primarily used for its hemostatic (bleeding control) properties and is widely applied to promote wound healing, relieve pain, and stop bleeding both internally and externally. The main active ingredient is believed to be Panax notoginseng (Tienchi ginseng), though the full formula remains a closely guarded trade secret. Other reported ingredients include Ajuga forrestii Diels plant, Chinese yam root (Dioscoreae nipponica Makino), Erodium stephanianum and Geranium wilfordii plants, Dioscoreae parvilora ting root, Inula cappa plant[4]. Mechanistically, it appears to activate platelets—critical components of blood clotting—and may enhance expression of platelet surface glycoproteins[2][4][5]. There are also claims of anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects; some studies suggest it can induce apoptosis in certain cancer cell lines such as canine hemangiosarcoma cells[2][4]. It has been used extensively in both human and veterinary medicine but lacks approval or formal evaluation by regulatory agencies such as the FDA or EMA[5].
