Yupingfeng Guizhi Heji

Yupingfeng Guizhi Heji is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) combination formulation. It combines the classical formulas "Yupingfeng San" (玉屏风散) and "Guizhi Tang" (桂枝汤). Yupingfeng San typically contains Astragalus membranaceus (黄芪), Atractylodes macrocephala (白术), and Saposhnikovia divaricata (防风), used to tonify qi, strengthen the body's exterior, and enhance resistance to external pathogens. Guizhi Tang includes Cinnamomum cassia twig (桂枝), Paeonia lactiflora root (白芍), Zingiber officinale rhizome (生姜), Glycyrrhiza uralensis root (甘草), and Ziziphus jujuba fruit (大枣); it is used for harmonizing ying and wei, relieving exterior syndromes with deficiency. The combined formula is designed to both reinforce vital energy ("qi") and regulate the body's surface defense while also harmonizing internal-external imbalances. It is primarily indicated for individuals with constitutional weakness who are susceptible to respiratory infections or have symptoms such as spontaneous sweating, aversion to wind/cold, fatigue, or recurrent colds. Mechanistically in TCM theory, it works by boosting immune function ("tonifying qi"), stabilizing the body's defensive barrier ("consolidating the exterior"), and regulating autonomic balance. Modern studies suggest that these formulas may help improve immune response parameters in chronic respiratory diseases such as stable COPD when used adjunctively[5]. However, its mechanism of action should be understood within TCM theory; there are no direct molecular targets established in Western pharmacology.
