Overview

ZAAX is a standardized tomato extract (STE) developed as a dietary supplement and nutraceutical with antiplatelet and antihypertensive properties. It is primarily investigated by Beata Krasinska and colleagues at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences for its potential as an alternative to acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) in patients with primary hypertension and high cardiovascular risk, particularly those with obesity. The extract exerts its effects through a multifactorial mechanism, inhibiting platelet aggregation mediated by ADP, thromboxane, collagen, von Willebrand factor, and thrombin. Unlike aspirin, its antiplatelet effects are reversible and do not significantly increase the risk of major bleeding, making it a potentially safer option for primary prevention in high-risk individuals.
