Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zafbena is a Captisol-enabled formulation of bendamustine hydrochloride, a bifunctional mechlorethamine derivative with both alkylating agent and purine antimetabolite-like activities. It is primarily developed for the treatment of hematologic malignancies, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and various types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The formulation utilizes Ligand Pharmaceuticals' proprietary Captisol technology (sulfobutylether beta-cyclodextrin) to enhance the solubility and stability of the active ingredient, bendamustine. BendaRx Pharmaceuticals is the lead developer for this product, having filed a New Drug Application (NDA) in China. Ligand Pharmaceuticals maintains a royalty interest in the product through its Captisol material sales and potential milestone payments. The association with GSK in some records likely stems from BendaRx's founding by former GSK oncology executives.
