Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zaleplon is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic of the pyrazolopyrimidine class, primarily indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It acts as a sedative by selectively binding to benzodiazepine sites on the alpha-1 subunit of the GABA-A receptor complex in the central nervous system, enhancing GABAergic inhibition and promoting sleep onset. Unlike traditional benzodiazepines, zaleplon has minimal effects on sleep architecture and is considered an ultrashort-acting agent. It was developed by King Pharmaceuticals[5][3][6].
