Zanapezil (TAK-147) is a selective acetylcholine esterase inhibitor that has been investigated as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Its chemical structure is 3-[1benzylpiperdin-4-yl]-1-(2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1 H-1-benzazepin-8-yl) propan-1-one fumarate. Studies have shown that oral administration of Zanapezil increases acetylcholine levels in the ventral hippocampus of rats, similar to donepezil, but with potentially fewer side effects and a faster onset of action. It has also been identified through structural similarity searches as potentially possessing antileishmanial properties.
