Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Zanthoxylum bungeanum pericarp extract (ZBE) is a botanical extract derived from the outer shell (pericarp) of the *Zanthoxylum bungeanum* plant, commonly known as Szechuan pepper. The extract is rich in flavonoids, with major components identified as rutin, quercetin, and isoquercitrin. ZBE has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities in preclinical models. Research indicates that ZBE can alleviate symptoms of experimental colitis, such as weight loss and colon shortening, by inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin-12 (IL-12). This therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through the regulation and inhibition of the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway. ZBE is being investigated as a potential dietary strategy or nutraceutical intervention for the management of ulcerative colitis.
